Track One:
30 credits in courses numbered 201 and above in two of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Normally students will take 15 credits in each of the two languages. However, they may petition to take 18 credits in one language and 12 in the other.
Students may be able to petition to pursue courses in a language other than Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Students interested in this option should consult with the World Languages and Cultures advisor as early as possible.
Track Two:
Students can opt to take 27 credits (level 201 or above) in one language (either French or Italian) PLUS one of the following courses: LIN 201 The Nature and Study of Language; LIN 202 Diversity of World Languages; or any LIT (World literature in translation) class.
World Languages and Cultures majors are strongly encouraged to spend a semester or a year abroad in a country that speaks the chosen languages(s) of their program.
Major Requirements

OR
Track Two:
Students can opt to take 27 credits (level 201 or above) in one language, either French or Italian, PLUS one of the following courses: LIN 201 The Nature and Study of Language; LIN 202 Diversity of World Languages; or any LIT (World literatures in translation) course for a total of 30 credits.
If they are close to meeting the credit requirements, students may be able to petition to pursue courses in a language other than Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Students interested in this option should consult with the World Languages and Cultures advisor as early as possible.
College of Arts and Sciences Requirements
For all Arts and Sciences|Maxwell students, successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in this major requires a minimum of 120 credits, 96 of which must be Arts and Sciences|Maxwell credits, completion of the Liberal Arts Core requirements, and the requirements for this major (30 credits) that are listed above.
Dual Enrollments:
Students dually enrolled in Newhouse* and Arts and Sciences|Maxwell will complete a minimum of 122 credits, with at least 90 credits in Arts and Sciences|Maxwell coursework and an Arts and Sciences|Maxwell major.
*Students dually enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences|Maxwell as first year students must complete the Liberal Arts Core. Students who transfer to the dual program after their first year as singly enrolled students in the Newhouse School will satisfy general requirements for the dual degree program by completing the Newhouse Core Requirements.
