This course introduces students to the design process. Students will learn methods for ideation and realization of solutions to design problems, as well as practicing design presentation methods.

This multidisciplinary design course enhances students' problem-solving potential by developing creative thinking skills. Students identify assumptions, disrupt habits, and challenge norms, moving from small problems to wicked ones to produce meaningful, different solutions that drive change. Examines the impact of design and technology on humans and society by exploring the agents that shape culture, values, behaviors, and the adoption of designed products, services, and environments.

This course covers foundations of ethical design research with diverse methodologies. Focused on research sprints, students learn background knowledge application, protocol creation, data collection, analysis techniques, and deriving meaningful conclusions, ensuring research integrity and relevance.

Research in Practice supports post-graduation transition into professional roles as design futurists. The course is designed to guide the development of student professional identity and goals, facilitate student-industry connections, and help students initiate the conceptualization of a research-rich capstone project.

Students conduct an immersive exploration about a design-related inquiry, producing evidence-based, socially impactful proposals for innovation and change. Students demonstrate readiness for leadership in design research and thinking.
