This class is an introduction to the foundational principles of visual narrative, emphasizing its connections to illustration, animation, and sequential art. Core topics encompass basic story structure, film terminology, character archetypes, and theme analysis.
IAN 102  Illustration Foundations  (3 Credits)

This class will begin the student¿s journey as an image-based storyteller. They will build the foundational skills needed to visually communicate through assignments structured to develop perceptual and conceptual literacy.
IAN 103  Art and Craft of Animation  (3 Credits)

Introductory studio course explores animation history and practice, with a strong emphasis on practice. Students will learn important animation techniques and modalities and build a foundation for further coursework or personal exploration of animation.
IAN 104  Introduction to 3D Animation  (3 Credits)

The first course in this three course series focuses on concepts, aesthetics, and practice of 3D animation and visual effects. This course is an introduction to modeling, texturing, digital-sculpting and shading.

The fundamentals for making art with computers in consideration of time and interactivity. The fundamentals of using programming and software applications for multimedia and the internet.
IAN 201  Storyboarding  (3 Credits)

This course is designed to introduce students to the art of storyboarding, focusing on its connection to narrative structure. Students will explore the storyboard workflow, from initial sketches to final panels. The curriculum introduces techniques used across television and film production.
IAN 204  Intermediate 3D Animation  (3 Credits)

The second course in this three course series focuses on concepts, aesthetics, and practice of 3D animation and visual effects. This course will be an introduction to keyframe, procedural and character animation.

IAN 211  2D Animation  (3 Credits)  
Art  
Animation is everywhere! From television, film, and advertising to gaming, motion graphics, and gifs, animation is everywhere and more accessible to creators than ever. This class is an introduction to the principles of 2D Animation. It will survey the various animation techniques such as straight-ahead animation, in-betweens, layout, lip synch, acting, and design along with concepts such as timing, exaggeration, and anticipation.

Exploring computer gaming topics assigned at the outset of the semester. Topics may include mobile gaming, pervasive gaming, self-made alternative game controllers for existing games, or 3D gaming.

Students will produce portfolio-quality graphics that deliver advanced aesthetics. Emphasis will be placed on visual expression/communication of digital creation.
