Starting with cave paintings, people have always told stories visually. We will follow comics¿ humble beginnings from etchings and engravings to four-color printing and beyond, exploring comics¿ influence on and reflection of American culture. Additional work required for graduate students.
ILL 650 Illustration Graduate Summer Intensive (3 Credits)

This two week intensive will allow students to visit or host visits with NYC art directors, workspaces, museums and galleries, design firms and publishing houses. Special drawing and research assignments will be assigned throughout.
ILL 651 L.A. Illustration Studio (3 Credits)
Art
Students travel to Los Angeles to observe the illustration industry. Students will visit major film studios along with meeting illustrators and other creative industry leaders. Final project is a travel journal documenting their class.

The goal of this class is to build on the objectives learned in ILL 661 Illustration Graduate Studio I. The course will function more independently with students creating, researching and making a hardbound book of a collection of their drawings or visual narrative stories.

ILL 663 New Directions in Illustration (3 Credits)

This class analyzes primitive, native, and outsider art and their utilization in contemporary illustration. Students will explore new artistic directions in their own work, moving from classic European figurative-based photographic works to the more Expressionistic works of artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Duchamp.
ILL 664 Licensing from Studio to Market (3 Credits)

A class for the entrepreneurial artist to develop creative products for commercial markets that can be disseminated via licensing. Students will take their ideas from concept to fabrication while learning about the licensing world.

ILL 669 Drawing on Location (3 Credits)

This course consists of three components: Weekly sketchbook drawings at various locations, a narrative series of drawings that journal a place, person, or thing, and the reinterpretation of a historical landmark with a modern approach.

This is a seminar class for graduate students and will focus on exploring research strategies including the collection, interpretation, and presentation of visual information. Students will read selected writings by creatives on a weekly basis, contribute to class discussions, and examine their own research strategies.

By reading and analyzing works of literature students will delve into why such work produces powerful emotional connections. In addition to reading books students will create their own narratives.

grounded in research with a direct correlation to the topic of the visual thesis. The
thesis subject will be formulated in anticipation of professional outcomes.

Students will create a cohesive series of artworks based on their chosen thesis topic. The form of the visual thesis will be reflective of the students¿ chosen professional direction, using appropriately targeted media, style, and topical focus. The visual thesis will be created for exhibition. The written thesis will be finalized.
